Bio of Monica F. Helms

 • Served in the Navy from 1970 to 1978, on two submarines.

• Editor ship’s newspaper for USS Francis Scott Key (SSBN 657) from 1974 to 1976.

• Written over 20 short stories, six published.

• Short Story “The Phone of Plenty” won 3rd Place in the 1993 Arizona Author’s Contest.

• In 1998, science fiction novel Valhalla was first published by a small publishing company, which is no longer in business.

• Now has six books published.

• Has a chapter in an anthology called Trans People in Love, published by Haworth Press, Inc. in 2007.

• Began living as a woman and changed name in 1997.

• Regular column in Transgender Tapestry called “. . . And That’s the Way it is.” From 2000 to 2006.

• Founder of the Transgender American Veterans Association 2003 (TAVA.)  President from 2003 10 2013.

• Created the first Transgender Pride Flag in 1999.

• Has two sons and two grandsons.

• Is partnered with Darlene Wagner, PhD.

• Has done video production since 1983, has over 100 videos on YouTube.

• Works for the same telecommunication company since 1990.
