It took me almost ten years to achieve acceptance into the Region Ten transgender program. Not until the retirement of Chief of Endocrinology, Dr Barbara Fleming, was I treated with dignity and respect. That doctor breached private information to me about other patients she was seeing and abused me verbally in private. A publicity campaign that Region Twenty deemed a success is still ignored in Region Ten. Letters to the former director were ignored with denial that the VA does such things and with stony silence. Region Ten now has a new interim director. That is some new hope.

Today, finally. I am addressed SOMEtimes as Ms. and male vets stare but say little which is an improvement over facing possible attack.

Congress restricted SRS to veterans in 1986, specifically making it illegal for VHA, which previously was doing surgery on a teaching basis.
